You know what really grinds my gears? How some people really seem to enjoy living in a constant state of hysteria and anxiety. We’ve gone from being told that we’re all going to die because of the “climate emergency,” to Donald Trump wanting to make Canada the 51st state. Relax, my fellow Canadians; it’s NOT going to happen! The process for Canada to dissolve our Dominion and become an American state is a lot more complicated than just a signature on an Executive Order. It will be a long, drawn-out process that will require a lot of different entities to come to an agreement.
What about issues with Quebec, or First Nations treaty issues? Does anyone really believe that Quebecers would tolerate becoming an American state? Actually, maybe that’s enough of a landmine to convince President Trump to abandon the idea!
You can also rule out the threat of an armed invasion by the American military, as that is even less likely to happen. I can’t envision any scenario where there wouldn’t be at least one American General or Admiral who will tell the President that there is no way the American military is going to invade an ally, let alone an NATO ally, which according to Article 5, would require other NATO nations to come to our aid. Can all of you imagine the diplomatic mess that would create? And all of you thought that it was going to be the Russian invasion of Ukraine that would lead to a world war?!
In a strange way, this whole scenario has served to highlight exactly why Canadian politicians, of all political parties, have been absolutely foolish and negligent in allowing our country to become so dependent on America for our international trade and national defence. Instead, successive governments have let our military rot, and more recently, disregarded border security and crippled our energy and manufacturing sectors, along with tearing down and demonizing everything good about Canada. As much as I’m in favour of international trade and cooperation, we likely wouldn’t be in this position if we had things, amongst others, like a strong military, strong border control and strong industrial, energy and manufacturing sectors, unburdened by excessive taxation and restrictive regulations that make them unprofitable. Funny how it took President Trump to convince the Trudeau government that those factors are good things, along with having pride in Canada and being Canadian! Oh yeah, and we’re not a racist, genocidal nation either!
So, everyone, lay off the alarmist rhetoric and just enjoy your winter vacation in Florida or Las Vegas. Doing otherwise, we are just feeding into President Trump’s penchant for sticking his finger in the eye of those he seeks to annoy. Perhaps if our leaders and political pundits stopped acting like a child complaining to their parents that their older sibling won’t stop making faces at them, we might be able to get to work on more important issues.
There are a lot of people and factors that are to blame for this current mess. Donald Trump is just highlighting it for us!

An now a slightly different version:
Oy Vey! Would all of you hair-on-fire alarmists give it a rest?! Canada is NOT going to become the 51st state! Just because President Donald Trump says he wants to annex Canada, doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen. Annexing Canada would involve a LOT more than just a declaration; a LOT more than a signature on a Presidential Executive Order.
Don’t even get started on President Trump sending in the U.S. Army to take over Canada. That’s even less likely to happen than me winning the lottery! I really can’t see even the most dedicated Trump disciple supporting an armed invasion/war with America’s closest ally, regardless of how strongly Trump’s critics may cite his “admiration” for Vladimir Putin. Besides, we burned their White House once before. Do the Americans want to take the chance of that happening again?
While I’m no constitutional expert, dissolving our Dominion and joining America would require not only the agreement of America’s House of Representatives and Senate, it would also require the agreement of Canada’s 10 provinces and 3 territories, the House of Commons, the Senate and or course, our Head of State, His Majesty King Charles III. That is just one of the many, many issues that will have to be overcome by governments and civil servants, the same lot who will spend months and months and hold many, many, many committee meetings to decide how many safety pilons need to be placed at a condominium construction site.
What about issues with Quebec, or First Nations treaty issues? Does anyone really believe that Quebecers would tolerate becoming an American state?
This is all without even crunching the potential Electoral College numbers that Canada, as a state, would be entitled to, something that could permanently tip the advantage to the Democratic Party, given that Canada’s general political leanings would likely fit better with Democrat political philosophies. That aspect alone should be enough to convince President trump that annexing Canada would be a colossally bad idea.
So, my fellow Canadians, don’t worry about having to learn the words to The Star-Spangled Banner any time soon. Your great-grandchildren’s great-great grandchildren will still be singing O Canada, so lay off the alarmist rhetoric and just enjoy your winter vacation in Florida.
