Poll shows voters trust Mark Carney more than Pierre Poilievre

August 2026

When Mark Carney came down last year from high upon in his Manhattan penthouse to save us all, with his elbows held high up to battle the enemies of Canada, there was a great euphoria amongst the progressives and the faculty class. He made promises that he would, to borrow a phrase, Make Canada Great Again. He promised things like trade deals with President Trump, homes built at record speeds and increased defence spending, supposedly, on things other than tampons in men’s washrooms.

Now, the defence spending may take a little longer to see the actual results, but seeing as we don’t already have a firm commitment on whether we are going to buy the full order of F-35 jets as planned, or not; seeing as we have no firm commitment that our beloved Snowbird Air Demonstration Squadron will be flying again anytime soon, I’m still giving Carney a failing grade, so far.

For all of Carney’s promises, he’s still very slow on delivering the results, that is, when he’s not backtracking on previously made promises, like cutting the lavish health-care plan provided to asylum seekers and refugee claimants. Instead of actually making life more affordable for Canadians, he bribes us with our own money with the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, something that looks nice sitting in your bank account, but does little to actually reduce the cost of groceries, like cutting carbon taxes levied at all levels of supply chain would do.

Instead of letting the developers of the unsold condominiums in Vancouver take a financial hit by forcing them to reduce prices to a level where buyers will actually want to buy them, Carney would rather bail them out with taxpayer’s money. Normally when a private corporation creates an oversupply of their product, they reduce the price for easier sale, lest they be forced into bankruptcy. I have a big problem with any governing political party throwing buckets of corporate welfare around, but it’s much worse when that corporate welfare has a direct effect of keeping inflated prices high, especially when we are in the midst of an affordability crisis across the country.

Now the Toronto Sun reports that “Carney presided over the worst record of economic growth in Canada during his first year in office of any prime minister in more than half a century — negative growth of 0.5%, as reported by Bloomberg News,” something no doubt exacerbated by unnecessarily-high corporate taxes and unnecessarily-complicated regulatory processes that drive economy-growing investment out of this country.

So, can anyone remind me why again why Carney is riding high in the polls?
