The Canadian Armed Forces Day & Air Show returned with a vengeance in 2022 at Camp Borden, for the first time since 2018. The two-day event over the Father’s Day weekend is normally held every second year on the “Air Force side” of Camp Borden, the site of a World War I training school for the Royal Air Force that became the birthplace of the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1924.
Record attendance numbers were reported by the event organizers, with around 54, 000 attendees enjoying the static displays, children-centred activities that included the “kiddie-commando” course, the Brewfest craft beer competition for the 19+ crowd, and of course, the air show.
This year’s air show featured aerial demonstrations by the Canadian Forces Parachute Demonstration Team, the “SkyHawks,” the Northern Stars Aerobatic Team, former RCAF fighter pilot Martin Hivon, Trevor Rafferty, Manfred Radius’s sailplane demonstration, an RCAF Griffin Helicopter, a U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbird, and the headliner officially known as the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, but better known to air show enthusiasts as the “Snowbirds.”
Nearly 4,000 lbs of non-perishable food to the Barrie Food Bank was collected from spectators, in lieu of paid parking.
