Mark Carney’s government has been subject to a lot of much deserved criticism for promising a lot and delivering very little other than promises to consider assembling an advisory panel to determine if they will consider proceeding with drafting a proposal to present to an advisory panel, that will then consider if the idea can go to the stage where they will consider announcing a proposal to assemble an advisory panel to advise them on how to assemble an advisory panel……. and on and on.
Despite acknowledging the need to drastically increase our defence spending and recruitment into the Canadian Armed Forces, the Carney government has thrust the future of the celebrated 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, more commonly known as the Snowbirds, in serious doubt with news that the summer of 2026 will be their final season for the foreseeable future. The aging CT-114 Tutor aircraft are well past their serviceable life, despite the exceptional efforts of the RCAF maintainers to keep the aircraft flying.
The Carney government has stressed that they intend to replace the Tutor aircraft to keep the Snowbirds flying for generations to come. This promise, one of many promises for future action the Carney government have proclaimed, is not terribly reassuring given the fact that no replacement aircraft is even under consideration, let alone approved and in production. There is really no valid excuse for being in this position, given that a 2003 DND study recommended the replacement process begin immediately so a replacement aircraft could be in service by 2010.
Despite what some may think, the Snowbirds are more than just a superfluous carnival act. It is an incredible honour for pilots of the Royal Canadian Air Force to be chosen as a member of the Snowbirds. Snowbird pilots amongst the best of the best of military pilots and the training they receive makes them formidable opponents in an air battle during wartime. The actual reason to have a military is for the defence of your country and its citizens, even for a supposed peacekeeper nation as Canada. If you want peace, prepare for war. If you want to diminish the chances of your country being attacked by a foreign army or terrorist group, you need to make them believe you will obliterate them if attacked.
So while you are watching some really cool aerobatic moves by the Snowbird pilots, what you are actually seeing are highly trained pilots demonstrating the skills needed to successfully challenge and possibly destroy enemy aerial combatants.
If Carney is looking to save money (yeah, the thought of the Carney government trying to save money makes me chuckle too), I personally could come up with many other ideas for cutting expenses. Cutting the exceptional training opportunity the Snowbirds provide for RCAF pilots would be a huge mistake.
