Screw the West?! Not this time!

January 2025

As pointed out in the Toronto Sun editorial from 11 January 2025 “Cinderella will go to the inaugural ball,” Alberta stands to lose the most from Trump’s threatened 25% tariffs on all things Canadian.  Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, just like his father Pierre, has always made sure Alberta gets screwed as much as possible.  Apparently, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is saying “No more!”

For 9 years, Ottawa has kneecapped Alberta’s oil and gas industry, throwing up roadblocks to resource development and shipment to both internal and international markets.  Combined with Trudeau’s declaration that there is “no business case” for selling Canadian natural gas to countries like Germany and Japan, this has denied both the Alberta and Canadian treasuries the much needed income that could help reduce provincial and national debts and fund needed social programs across the country.

Of course, many older Canadians will remember during the 1980 election, when Liberal organizer Keith Davey made his infamous statement, “Screw the west, we’ll take the rest.”  It’s no wonder that Danielle Smith feels it’s necessary to forcefully advocate for Alberta’s interests, even if it hampers Canada’s negotiations with President Donald Trump.
