Politicians must be paid by the taxpayers, but why is the CBC?

Published in the Barrie Advance/Metroland Media, 28 April 2023

Re: Editorial cartoon for Simcoe.com, 27 April 2023:

Your editorial comic in the 27 April edition does need some context.  While it’s true that Pierre Poilievre’s salary is paid by the Canadian taxpayers, as are the salaries of all politicians, at all levels, the big difference is the CBC can, and should, be fully funded through advertising revenue, along with additional revenue opportunities like paid subscriptions for premium content on their web site or a streaming service.

Politicians can only be paid their salary by their employer.  Any other direct income sources are usually called corruption and is something that can, and should, end in a lengthy prison sentence.  Even campaign donations are strictly regulated, as are any investments that can be impacted, especially in a positive way, by said politician’s office.
