With the high cost of owning a house or renting an apartment in southern Ontario, sometimes people have to get creative when it comes to finding a suitable abode. In the small, unincorporated village of Campbellville, around 40 miles west of Toronto, a 110-year-old former caboose is for sale for the low price of $45, 000.
Sitting on a corner of 43 Main Street East in Campbellville, the 32 foot by 10 foot, solid wood and metal frame red caboose was originally built for Canadian National Railways in 1912. It has previously been used as an ice cream shop and most recently used as an office and showroom for a limousine company. It has also become a bit of a local attraction over the years.
Interior features include leather benches, laminate wood flooring, built-in bar fridge, LED lights and pot lights, and built-in stereo speaker system. It’s currently not recommended for residential use at this time, as it doesn’t have a kitchen, running water or a bathroom, although running water and suitable bathroom facilities could be added through installing sewage lines and holding tanks.
It is wired for hydro, but it’s currently not hooked up right now.
The land the caboose sits on is leased for $400 a month, and the seller is hopeful the eventual buyer will move the caboose to their own property, for use as either a tiny home or as a play structure for children.
