Sports field dedicated to Barrie-born Canadian Sports Hall of Fame inductee now just a memory

August 2025 Today, it’s an empty, overgrown field. However, just nine short years ago, this was the sports field for Barrie Central Collegiate, in Barrie, Ontario, as it had since 1951. Known as Red Storey Field, the sports field named after Canadian Sports Hall of Fame winner and Barrie native Alvin “Red” Storey. Generations of …

Lindsay man charged with assaulting a criminal who broke into his home

August 2025 While on the surface, it’s quite satisfying to hear that a previously convicted criminal received a serious beat-down when breaking into a private residence, I’ll reserve judgment on whether the homeowner should be facing charges too, until more details are available.   Bottom line, Canadians don’t enjoy the same legal protections regarding defending yourself, …

The Golden Age Of The Iron Bridge in Sullivan County

August 2025 Sullivan County in south-eastern New York State is known known for being a significant part of the Borscht Belt, the vacation land for New York City-area Jewish families prior to integration. The county also has a collection of historic iron bridges from an age when bridge construction was transitioning from wood framed construction …

It’s way beyond the time to get tough on crime in Toronto

August 2025 So, the citizens of Toronto want police to do something about the brazen shooting sprees that have been terrorizing the city for years. You know, like the ones that claim the lives of young children in their beds, or a mother of two children outside a Leslieville “safe” injection site.  Well, there are …

Canada’s War Dead Honoured in Fairview Cemetery in Niagara Falls

August 2025 The National War Memorial in Ottawa, Ontario, was officially dedicated on 21 May 1939, originally to commemorate Canadians who died in World War I. By 1982, it was re-dedicated to honour those who died World War II and the Korean War, with dedications to those lost in the Second Boer War and Afghanistan …

HMS Nancy – Wasaga Beach’s link to the War of 1812

August 2025 When most people think of the War of 1812 battlefields, they think of areas from the St. Lawrence River, to Lake Ontario, to Lake Erie. Many will forget that Lake Huron and Georgian Bay also saw action during the war. Wasaga Beach is now a beach resort community, but during the War of …

Ghosts of Canada’s industrial past – The abandoned former Goodyear Plant in Bowmanville

August 2025 Since the early 2000s, the manufacturing sector in Canada has declined significantly in response to changes in the global economy and fewer regulatory controls over Canadian produced products. In Bowmanville, a large brown brick building, once owned by Goodyear Tire Company, silently stands like a tombstone to a manufacturing past that is likely to …

My thoughts on the World Junior Hockey sexual assault trial – The court got it right!

July 2025 I have mixed feelings regarding the recent court ruling in London’s Superior court. Legally, it was the right decision, but from a moral standpoint, it’s sickening that it even happened in the first place, and both sides have mud on their faces. Regardless of their acquittal in the courtroom, I still think each …

You just got “Coldplayed” – The couple whose affair got outed in a spectacularly public way

July 2025 First we had “Rick-rolling.” Now we have getting “Coldplayed!” There’s an old saying that “Two things can be true at the same time.” Yes, Andy Byron, the CEO of Astronomer, and his HR Director, Kristin Cabot, whose affair got exposed at a Coldplay concert (Yeah, there first mistake was going to a Coldplay …

Victoria Square Park – City park was once Toronto’s military burial ground

July 2025 Victoria Square Park, in downtown Toronto, is a small park with a morbid past. Like McBurney Park in Kingston, Ontario, a park known locally as Skeleton Park, was the final resting place for many early settlers in the Toronto area of Upper Canada. The cemetery was established in 1793, under orders from Governor …
