Not just throwing them under the bus, but backing the bus up and running over them again

August 2020 The WE scandal just keeps showing that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is either colossally incompetent, or just plain corrupt, neither of which are good. There is an oblivious arrogance (or ignorance) to the fact that just because Trudeau thinks he is doing good, that he can do whatever he wants to do. This …

Restoring the past – the Canadian National Railway station in Jarvis

August 2020 A sad reality as the years march by is that some of the buildings and structures in our communities are demolished and replaced by new buildings; sometimes even historic buildings. It’s called progress. Even some that aren’t purposely demolished are left abandoned and allowed to deteriorate to the point that it’s too expensive …

Published in the Toronto Sun, 7 August 2020. With the imminent re-opening of schools this fall, Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) President Sam Hammond is already criticizing the plan announced by the Ontario government. Among his complaints are that ETFO wasn’t consulted and that more teachers need to be hired (aka more dues paying …

Gone but not forgotten – The Hamilton Studebaker Plant

July 2020 Hamilton, Ontario, is a proud, working-class city that is best known for its steel production, leading to its nick-name, “The Steel City.” Hamilton was also home to a Studebaker automobile factory, established in 1947, in the former WWII Otis-Fenson anti-aircraft gun plant on Victoria Street North, built in 1907. Studebaker was originally founded …

Memories of a grand era – The Maple Grand Trunk Railway station

July 2020 The Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) disappeared from the railway landscape 97 years ago, but fortunately, many of the former GTR stations remain standing today; mostly being used for non-railway functions. In Maple, Ontario, just north of Toronto, one of the former GTR stations is still a very busy railway station. Currently owned by …

Some police duties are better handled by police officers

July 2020 With the “Defunding the Police” movement gaining traction in many cities, the municipal council in Berkeley, California, announced back in March it plans to look at forming a special traffic enforcement department that will use unarmed city workers to conduct traffic stops, instead of police officers. Back in March, the municipal council in Berkeley, California, …

July 2020 The Guild Inn, also known simply as The Guild, is a historic former hotel along the Scarborough Bluffs, that now operates as a banquet and special events facility. Originally known as Brickford Manor, this white stucco, Arts and Crafts-style manor house, was built in 1914 by Colonel Harold on his 40 acres property. …

Premier Ford criticizes dramatic increase in parking rates on Barrie waterfront

July 2020 Premier Doug Ford recently criticized the dramatic increase in parking rates for municipal lots and street parking along the waterfront in Barrie to $10 per hour, calling it price gouging during a pandemic.  As a Barrie resident, I’d like to offer some context to the issue. Part of the reason the waterfront parks …

We can’t afford John Tory’s Rail Deck Park vanity project

July 2020 Toronto Mayor John Tory is definitely one of the most likable politicians out there. However, I think his proposed Rail Deck Park, a plan to build an approximately 20 acre park atop the rail corridor rail corridor between Bathurst Street and Blue Jays Way, in downtown Toronto, should be put on ice, perhaps …
