Fiddle’s Dari-King – Parksville’s once popular seasonal eatery now a memory

May 2023 The small Hamlet of Parksville was once a vibrant community, as was much of the Catskills region of New York State. Colloquially known as the “Borscht Belt,” Parksville was part of the summer vacation haven for New York City Jews prior to integration and prior to cheap airfare, that allowed families to travel …

Light Rail Transit is proving to be a costly boondoggle for Toronto

May 2023 Given the latest issues surrounding the trouble-plagued Eglington Crosstown LRT line, over-budget and years behind on its construction schedule, can someone remind me why it’s a good idea to build a dedicated LRT line, instead of dedicated bus lanes? The benefits of having lanes dedicated exclusively to transit vehicles are quite obvious, but …

Wychwood Barns – Former Toronto streetcar barns given a new life through adaptive reuse

May 2023 Like all big cities, Toronto, Ontario, has long had an extensive public transportation system. Starting in 1849, the City of Toronto gave Williams Omnibus Bus Lines, owned by local cabinetmaker Burt Williams, a licence to operate the first mass transportation system in the city. Starting with an initial complement of four six-passenger horse-drawn stagecoaches, …

How many is too many? – Our politicians need to actually do something

May 2023 Repeat their names: Andrew Hong, Morgan Russell, Devon Northrup, Grzegorz Pierzchala, Maureen Breau, Travis Jordan, Brett Ryan, Shaelyn Yangm and Eric Mueller. Are you listening Justin Trudeau? Doug Ford? These are all the police officers killed across Canada since last September. While policing is an inherently dangerous profession, at what point do we …

Is it time to honour police officers who die from suicide?

May 2023 On 7 May, police and peace officers from Ontario, Quebec and even New York City, were at Queen’s Park to honour Ontario police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.  Four officers killed in the past year, and one historical death, were honoured at this years’ service. The Canadian Police …

Historic home one of the few remnants of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s “Coloured Village”

May 2023 A small, non-descript, wood-frame house in the historic, picturesque southern Ontario town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, may look a little out of place amongst the surrounding homes. Known as the William and Susannah Steward House, this 1.5-storey home is one of few remnants of what became known as Niagara’s “coloured village,” a community made up …
