Beautiful Joe Park is a unique park, found in Meaford, Ontario. While many parks are meant to be dog-friendly, with fenced in leash-free sections where dogs can run free, Beautiful Joe Park is a park dedicated to all the canine friends that make our lives better, from service animals to search and rescue animals to our loyal companions. It’s also the final resting place for the real Beautiful Joe, a medium-sized, brown terrier-mix dog who was the victim of severe abuse.
Owned by a Meaford resident in 1890, Beautiful Joe had his ears and tail cut off and likely would have died if not rescued by Walter Moore, who nursed him back to health and named him Joe. Two years later, when Canadian author Margaret Marshall Saunders visited Meaford, she heard of Joe’s story from her sister-in-law Louise Moore. Saunders was inspired her to write a fictionalized telling from the Beautiful Joe’s point of view, published in 1893. The book would go on to become an international best seller and helped to promote the humane treatment of dogs.
For the book Beautiful Joe, Saunders changed the location to a small town in Maine and changed the family’s name from Moore to Morris. The book won a literary contest sponsored by the American Humane Education Society.
When Beautiful Joe died in 1902, he was laid to rest on the Moore family land.
In 1963, an 8.5 acre section of the Moore family land that included Beautiful Joe’s grave was severed and turned into a passive park, bounded by the Bighead River. By this time, the land was overgrown, leaving Beautiful Joe’s grave lost amongst the brush. The Meaford Rotary Club set about cleaning up the land and searching for Joe’s grave. With the grave marker found, the Rotary Club set about building a proper cairn, using rocks from the river, and historic plaque on the grave to properly honour the long-dead Beautiful Joe.
Future plans for Beautiful Joe Park include construction of a low-maintenance pedestrian bridge to cross the Bighead River joining Legion Park and Beautiful Joe Park. This new bridge would allow the Beautiful Joe Heritage Society, the caretakers of the park, to construct a new entrance and parking lot for the park, eliminating the steeply sloped and rutted driveway entrance that currently exists off Edwin Street.
The Beautiful Joe Heritage Society was formed in 1994 to honor the life of Beautiful Joe and the achievements of Margaret Marshall Saunders, along with the task of maintaining the park, adding walking trails, a bronze statue of Joe, and memorials honoring animal welfare and working dogs, including a tribute to 9/11 search-and-rescue dogs.
Of course, the park is also a dog friendly park.
