Guelph Covered Bridge – A modern footbridge with a historic design

April 2026

Although Ontario has just one covered bridge for vehicular traffic, found in West Montrose, there is a second one a little to the east in Guelph, that is for pedestrian and bicycle traffic only.

The Guelph Covered Bridge is a 144-foot lattice-covered walking bridge that spans the Speed River, near the junction of the Eramosa River.

Built in 1992 by 400 volunteers from the Timber Framers’ Guild, it was designed in the style of Ithiel Town lattice truss design from the 1880s. A notable for the amount of light it allows into the interior. While the supports have metal bars and bolts, the interior sports handmade wooden dowels.

The bridge, located at the beginning of the 4.1 kilometer Eramosa Trail, is a popular spot for walkers, runners, cyclists and students from the nearby University of Guelph.
