Prime Minister Mark Carney recently announced his government will not implement a mandate requiring that 20 per cent of all new vehicles sold in Canada by next year be electric, with current sales are less than half that, while promising a 60-day review of the country’s electric-vehicle program.
Prime Minister, cancel the electric vehicle mandate immediately, don’t just “review” and delay its implementation. How can you be so tone-deaf to the realities of the automobile market? Consumers who want them will buy them, without your mandates or bribery with our tax dollars. So far, E/Vs still make up a very small percentage of overall vehicle sales.
I’m not against electric vehicles and have driven them at my workplace, but Canadians should have the choice to buy one or a gas-powered vehicle, whichever better suits their needs. They certainly do have their place in our motor vehicle market, especially in big cities, where charging stations are more plentiful than many rural areas. However, they still have severe limitations, things like range limits, charging times, availability of chargers, etc. These limitations may be overcome sometime in the future, but that time is not yet and there is no sign that time will be within the next 10 years, when the current mandate of 100% E/V sales comes into force.
Further, can we stop saying that electric vehicles are “green” or “zero emissions?” When you take into consideration what goes into the manufacturing of the battery, they are VERY carbon intensive. Just because there are no emissions coming out of a tailpipe, doesn’t make them “emissions free.”
Lastly, I ask you and Premier Doug Ford to immediately cease any further bribes to manufacturers of electric car batteries. I’m against all government subsidies (bribes) to private businesses, but especially to “green” companies, which have proven time and time again to be industries that strictly on subsidies, not by offering a product that people actually want, thus generating profits.
