Canada Post needs to acknowledge they are no longer essential in the electronic age

May 2025

Canada Post workers are threatening to strike for the second time in a year. Well, it’s time for a reality check. Canada Post needs to acknowledge they are no longer an essential service in the electronic age. Yes, Canada Post is still needed and still has a place in Canadian society, but they seriously need to adjust their business model.

It’s very true that not everyone conducts personal and professional business on-line, especially older Canadians, who didn’t grow up with computers and the internet. However, given that most Canadians do conduct their business electronically, there is no justifiable reason for mail to be delivered 5-days a week. There is also very little reason for mail to still be delivered to individual homes.

Instead, mail delivery should be to a super mailbox near your house, or to your local post office/postal station, and delivery should be reduced to once a week. Unless I’m expecting a small package, one that can fit in the super mailbox, I check my mailbox once a week, usually the day before recycling day, as most of what I currently find in it goes directly into the recycling bin anyway.

I believe it would be fair to allow, on a case-by-case basis, home delivery for those with mobility issues, but for everyone else, get off your butts and walk to your super mailbox or post office.

What Canada Post needs to concentrate on, if they are to have any hope of becoming solvent again, is to concentrate on parcel delivery. If Canada Post can get that right, maybe they will have the financial breathing room to subsidize the far-flung routes that are unprofitable for private delivery services, but Canada Post cite in their claims that they are essential.

Oh yeah, and the postal union needs to go to Hell with their outrageous demands.
