Democrats fail to understand the difference between legal and illegal immigration

February 2026

I really enjoy a good debate, but I’ve found it next to impossible to have a reasonable debate with leftists, as they fail to distinguish between facts and feelings. As retired rapper Dr. Dreidel, better known as American political commentator Ben Shapiro, has to continuously remind people, “Facts don’t care about your feelings.”

When it comes to fact, too many leftists can’t seem to see the difference between legal and illegal immigration, let alone migration (for economic reasons) and refugees. For many of the Democrat supporters out there, which make up the anti-ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agitators causing problems for law enforcement in Minneapolis, they take the position that illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in America. Now, let’s take a step back and note that by being an illegal immigrant, you are committing a crime. Granted it’s generally a civil violation leading to deportation, unless you entered the country without inspection (illegally) or re-entering after deportation are federal criminal offenses.

They further conflate the issue by throwing in arguments that immigrants built America; that immigrants tend to take jobs that American citizens don’t want to take (that’s partly true; more about that below); that immigrants commit fewer crimes than citizens and should be left alone; that illegal immigrants pay taxes and contribute to the economy; that no one is illegal; and so on. That’s great, but once again, we’re talking about illegal immigration.

Regarding immigrants taking jobs Americans don’t want, that tends to be true of newer immigrants, and generally not those who have been in the country for years, even decades. Those immigrants have moved on to better jobs, either by founding a business that grows, upgrading their education so they can move into better paying jobs, or getting their foreign professional credentials recognized so they can resume their former career as a doctor, engineer, scientist, etc.

Below are just two of the discussions I became involved in, along with the original posting that prompted my response:

Bruce Forsyth – That’s great. Are they legal immigrants, because it’s ILLEGAL immigrants who are the problem, not LEGAL immigrants?!

Kim Staley to Bruce Forsyth NOPE! Billionaires and trillionaires are the problem! You have drunk too much Kool aid 🙄🙄🤬🤬🤬

Bruce Forsyth to Kim Staley, ummmm, that still doesn’t answer my question.

Kim Staley to Bruce Forsyth ok you want an answer?– it’s those billionaires and trillionaires that are telling you they’re the problem when they’re not. The wealthy are the biggest welfare queens — not someone who does the low paying jobs that Americans won’t do anymore! They actually help our economy and contribute billions in tax revenue to our economy!!

Immigrants in the United States, including both documented and undocumented individuals, contribute hundreds of billions of dollars in federal, state, and local taxes annually.

Total Tax Contributions:

All Immigrants: In 2023, immigrants in the U.S. paid an estimated $651.9 billion in total taxes (federal, state, and local). This accounted for approximately 19.2% of total tax revenue in the U.S. that year.

Undocumented Immigrants: In 2022, an estimated 10.9 million undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes.

This included $51.8 billion to $59.4 billion in federal taxes.

It included $37.3 billion in state and local taxes.

Undocumented workers paid an average of 10.1% of their income in state and local taxes, a rate higher than the top 1% of households, which paid 7.2%.

Bruce Forsyth to Kim Staley, wow, that’s great! However, illegal immigrants are still illegal, no matter how you try to spin it, and have no right to be in the country. The problem with people like you is you conflate the two. There is a big difference between legal immigrants, like my grandparents, and illegal immigrants. Finally, do you know who has the biggest problem with illegals? Legal immigrants.

Kim Staley to Bruce Forsyth sigh. Your ignorance of the laws is astounding! Most immigrants are on the track to becoming legal! And those that aren’t it still is ONLY a civic violation– in other words nOt a crime! And psst– most crimes are committed by citizens! Most immigrants are not committing crimes and work VERY hard. Those are the statistics out there. They are the hardest working people I know…

Kim Staley to Bruce Forsyth Entering America illegally is a misdemeanor.

Sexually abusing children is a felony.

You got the wrong folks in cages.

@AuntSassyAss

Bruce Forsyth to Kim Staley, seriously?! And what is the common factor between a misdemeanor and a felony? They are both criminal offences and thus, if you have committed either, you are by definition, a criminal and deserve to be arrested. But then, I guess you already knew that, as you said, “Entering America ILLEGALLY….” Yes, illegal immigration is generally a civil violation leading to deportation, but specific actions like crossing the border without inspection or re-entering after deportation are federal criminal offenses, treated as misdemeanors or felonies, with potential jail time and fines, depending on the specific act and prior offenses, according to the American Immigration Council. Your assertation that “Most immigrants are on the track to becoming legal.” conflates two separate issues. Those on track to become legal, by which would mean that they have made legal applications to become a permanent resident and perhaps a citizen, are VERY different from those who entered and remain in the country ILLEGALLY. It’s great that “Most immigrants are not committing crimes and work VERY hard,” but the issue is ILLEGAL immigrants. Once again, do you know who has the biggest problem with illegal immigrants? The astounding ignorance is on you.

Kim Staley to Bruce Forsyth I’ll say it again for you in the back– Entering America illegally is a misdemeanor.

Sexually abusing children is a felony.

You got the wrong folks in cages.

@AuntSassyAss

Bruce Forsyth to Kim Staley, yeah, I got that. Where does pedophilia come into the discussion? We’re talking about illegal immigration, not pedophilia. And once again, both misdemeanors and felonies are criminal offences. The only difference between the two is the severity of the punishment, if convicted, and the fact that felonies are more serious offences. What part of that don’t you understand? See the following for a more detailed explanation: https://www.lassencounty.org/dept/public-defender/what-difference-between-misdemeanor-and-felony. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Kylie Nichol to Bruce Forsyth oh did they take your dishwashing job

Bruce Forsyth to Kylie Nichol, wow, you’re pretty funny! Have you ever thought of being a comedian?! They can have my dishwashing job, if they are a LEGAL immigrant. I’ve long since moved up in the world.

Bruce Forsyth – ICE are targeting ILLEGAL immigrants & migrants, both of whom are VERY different from LEGAL immigrants. to

Jim Hosch to Bruce Forsyth nope, they pulled a US citizen out of his home in his underwear in freezing weather. They have stopped off several duty cops, just because they were persons of color. They have done pepper spraying which hit a couple of peaceful 70 year old citizens.

Bruce Forsyth to Jim Hosch, I’m not claiming that innocent people haven’t been swept up mistakenly, but can you advise me what happened to those who were? Were they deported or were they released after confirming they were legal US citizens? Can you forward me articles detailing the incidents that you cite? I’m interested in the truth, regardless of what that truth ultimately turns out to be.

Jim Hosch to Bruce Forsyth Check out this video, “70 year old woman hot by pepper spray” https://share.google/935T1I8oApreeUg5l

Jim Hosch to Check out this video, “police chief press conference” https://share.google/iP5zs6KmBKyRid970

I watched the videos as suggested by Jim Hosch. The second one was a police chief advising the press that various officers of colour, off-duty had been challenged by ICE agents. This is not right and any officers engaging in such conduct should be disciplined. That said, the chief did acknowledge that only a small number of ICE agents are behaving in such a way and that other ICE agents he spoke to have also condemned such behaviour.

As for the first video, it’s too bad that they were sprayed and that the ICE agents acted aggressively, but the man does acknowledge that the agents backed off once they realized the couple wasn’t a threat.  Also, when you take part in a protest, even a peaceful one, occasionally people get hurt, or detained temporarily.  I’m from the Toronto, Ontario area and can cite two recent examples where innocent, peaceful protesters and media personnel were injured or detained.  Look into the Freedom Convoy protest in Ottawa in January & February 2022 and the G8 Summit in 2010.

In Ottawa, Rebel News reporter Alexa Lavoie was shot in the leg with a rubber bullet at close range and a woman on a mobility scooter was trampled when mounted officers rushed the crow.  In Toronto, several protesters were “kettled” during the G8, meaning they were boxed in on a section of a downtown street and left there for hours in the rain.  Journalist Alex Pearson, now a talk show host on AM 640 Toronto, was caught up in that, despite having her journalism credentials on her.  Neither are right, but they happen.  Just ask any war correspondent about the risks of reporting from hostile areas.

Owen Hutchins to Bruce Forsyth ICE MURDERED two Americans you fucking fascist.

Bruce Forsyth to Owen Hutchins, in what way am I a fascist, or is anyone who espouses an opinion that you disagree with a fascist? Remember, a fascist has a specific meaning. As for ICE being murderers, do you believe in due process before a court of law, or can I accuse you of a crime, say being a pedophile, without presenting any evidence in court to substantiate my claim, or without you being able to defend yourself in a court of law? You can’t have it both ways and with your line of thinking, that is exactly what you are claiming.

There was no response from Owen, as he was just spouting rhetoric that he likely heard someone else saying, which is on-par for these low-information, low-intelligence agitators.
