As the calls for newly-elected independent MP Kevin Vuong to resign his seat grow louder and louder, related to a past sexual assault allegation in 2019, I do have to wonder why the double standard? The charges against Vuong were withdrawn, reportedly because his accuser didn’t want to participate in the court process. Only Vuong and his accuser know what really happened that night, but legally, he is considered innocent. Now, I’m not here to defend him, but even if he is guilty, it’s pretty hypocritical of the Liberal Party to boot Vuong from caucus, but not Prime Minister Blackface.
Included in Trudeau’s many transgressions, is the allegation that he sexually assaulted Rose Knight in Cresten, B.C. in 2000. As with Vuong, Trudeau wasn’t convicted of any crime, but given his admission that, “…people can experience interactions differently…,” there would appear to be a lot more legal merit to Knight’s allegation than Vuong’s accuser, at least to date anyway.
It is a valid criticism to say that Vuong should have disclosed the withdrawn charges to the party, something his other employer, the Canadian Armed Forces, is taking seriously. Remember, it wasn’t the Watergate break-in that led to the downfall of Richard Nixon; it was the cover-up. That said, failing to be forthcoming, or outright lying, hasn’t hurt Trudeau too much, so why would Vuong think he had to be forthcoming?
If Vuong doesn’t deserve to sit as a Member of Parliament, in or out of the Liberal Party, for legal and ethical lapses, there are others who deserve to be ejected along with him.
