Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow needs to drop the Dundas Street issue

August 2023

Re: “Hit the road, Chow” (Brian Lilley, Toronto Sun, 15 August): Mayor Chow, I would like to administer a little self-awareness test to you. I would agree with your proposal to re-name Dundas Street, if you and any of the other councilors who support this idiotic idea to re-name Dundas Street, all agree to forgo your salaries and benefits for as long as you hold elected office. I would also include Shelley Carroll, because it’s still a waste of money, even if the city had the extra money.

Additionally, anyone aspiring to be a city councilor who also supports the name change, you too will do it without a salary or benefits. Sound ridiculous? Of course it is, despite the money that could be saved. Politicians deserve to be paid, regardless of what we think of them.

Now tell me again why Toronto should be spending a lot more than $8.6 million, because we all know it will be a lot more, even if Jarvis Street isn’t re-named, for an equally ridiculous reason? One expense is the cost of doing business and the other is a useless waste of money for specious reasons, for the sake of a man that most, quite frankly, new nothing about before this decision.

Sources: Toronto is broke. Maybe renaming Dundas Street shouldn’t be a priority | Toronto Sun.
