June 2024
First it was Councilor Chris Moise at a public meeting, now it’s Councilor Shelley Carroll who displayed an appallingly high level of chutzpah in scolding those opposed to renaming Young-Dundas Square to Sankofa Square as racists in off-air discussions with Newstalk 1010 show hosts John Moore Show and Jerry Agar.
At the Toronto Council meeting the following day, when the councilors voted to confirm the name change, she doubled down on her racism accusations.
In addition, Carroll claimed, on-air at Newstalk 1010, that members of the black community were consulted and came up with the name (please name these Black community consultants!). She further ventured into her “white privilege” as one reason for not wanting to change her vote in favour of Sankofa, a Ghanian word. Beside the fact that the name Sankofa is quite the ironic choice if you are still holding to the false claim that Henry Dundas was a supporter of slavery and the slave trade, when Ghana was actively involved in the slave trade, but the name “Sankofa” has absolutely no connection to Toronto, or even Canada, in any way.
If councilors are so determined to spend the limited tax-payer dollars they have to honour the Black community, why not name it after Lincoln Alexander? For those of you who need a history lesson, including some sitting councilors apparently, he was the first Black Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and the first Black federal cabinet minister.
I also think that councilors need to stop complaining that Toronto has no money and needs to hike taxes when they engage in pointless and costly exercises in virtue signaling! Moise, Carroll and the rest of Toronto City Council should be ashamed of themselves for ramming this pointless name change down Torontonians throats and calling us racist for opposing it!
