So much for Trump being a fascist dictator

29 April 2017

Re:  “When all else fails, blame Canada” (Lorne Gunter, April 25):

Thanks to those suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, the mainstream liberal media has been full of hyperbolic rhetoric calling Trump a fascist and comparing him to Hitler.

As Gunter points out, Trump has failed so far in his efforts to replace Obamacare, bring in an immigration ban and bring in widespread tax cuts.

Under a true fascist regime, this would not be possible as the judiciary and the other branches of government would cede to the wishes of the regime, especially given that dissent would result in imprisonment or execution.

When an accused appeared in The People’s Court in front of Nazi Judge Roland Freisler, your appearance was a mere formality before your execution.

It should also be remembered that even though the Republicans hold majorities in Congress and the Senate, the RNC disowned Trump as their candidate during  the election, so Republican legislators are not necessarily his allies.

I guess this means President Trump is NOT a fascist dictator.  Who knew?!

Edited version that appeared in the Toronto Sun, 29 April 2017:

Re:  “When all else fails, blame Canada” (Lorne Gunter, April 25):  Gunter outlines in this column why Trump not very good at being fascist dictator, given his failure to replace Obamacare, bring in an immigration ban, bring in widespread tax cuts and get the wall construction started.  I can’t understand why he hasn’t just imprisoned all those who dare oppose him and just get on with the job.  Do you think that he might not really be a fascist dictator?  I need to know!

When all else fails, blame Canada!

Say you’re bombastic U.S. President Donald Trump and you’ve made your political hay by promising big on some hot-button issues. Now you’re coming to the end of your symbolic first 100 days in office and you have delivered on almost none of those.Obamacare is still in place. (Indeed, you received your biggest slap in the mouth so far for your attempt to repeal your predecessor’s health care scheme.) You’re nowhere close to turning the first shovel of desert for your wall with Mexico. Courts keep upending your efforts to impose a temporary travel ban on residents of countries with lots of potential terrorists. Widespread tax cuts won’t come this year, if at all.And as if your own list of shortfalls weren’t enough, whacked-out, nuclear-armed North Korea is making noise about launching an attack on U.S. bases in South Korea and Japan or even Alaska.

So what do you do to divert voters’ attention from these failures and delays?

Taking on China over its enormous trade imbalance with the U.S. will be a long and complicated process, if for no other reason than that Chinese investors, banks and other government entities hold much of America’s national debt.

Not going to be easy biting the hand that holds your mortgage.

There are only so many places you can drop a MOAB, the largest non-nuclear bomb in the world, (nicknamed the Mother of All Bombs), where you can make a big flash without the risk of killing a lot of civilians. The mountains of Afghanistan are one such place, but you’ve already had one dropped there.

So what can you do to manufacture a win?

Take a page out of the playbook of the iconoclastic animated series South Park and “Blame Canada!”
