If you thought Roxham Road had outlived its purpose, you’d be wrong.
The infamous Roxham Road, the now-officially-designated unofficial and illegal Point-of-Entry straddling the Canada-American border at Quebec and New York State, where economic migrants come to make their refugee claims in contravention of the Canada– U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, has officially re-opened.
After being shut down in March 2020, due to concerns related to the current Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Virus, ironically not due to the fact that it’s an illegal crossing site, it’s now business as usual at Roxham Road, with the RCMP officers posted there acting as bell-hops for the illegal migrants crossing there, just as they have February 2017.
The excuse given for allowing these “refugee claimants” to violate the Third Safe Country Agreement when crossing at Roxham Road, was that they feared persecution under Donald Trump (a ridiculous claim, by the way). Now, I know that Trump claims he won the election, but he didn’t, so why are we not enforcing the agreement now? Isn’t the United States now “safe” under the presidency of “Sleepy Joe” Biden?
For those who don’t know, the Safe Third Country Agreement states that refugee claimants are required to request refugee protection in the first safe country they arrive in, unless they qualify for an exception to the Agreement.
There is no reason for Canada not to turn back anyone claiming refugee status at Roxham Road, or any of the other illegal crossings between Canada and the United States. Despite what America-bashing progressives will tell you, America is not a country where people can rightfully claim the persecution. They are a country of laws and they have the same court process and refugee determination process that Canada has in place.
Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal, in a unanimous ruling in April 2021, ruled that the Third Safe Country Agreement doesn’t violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and Canada can indeed turn away asylum claimants who are arriving from the US.
“Those who arrive in the United States must claim refugee status in the United States under United States law. They cannot leave the United States and claim refugee status in Canada at a land port of entry. If they do so, Canada can refuse to consider their refugee claim and, if they have no other legal basis for remaining in Canada, return them to the United States,” the Court of Appeal read.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continues to demonstrate that he doesn’t care about Canadian law (unless it persecutes his opponents) and the sanctity of our borders.
