Paid sick leave a hot political topic

April 2021

Last week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced his government will implement a plan to give paid sick-leave to Ontario workers.

This week, his government voted against yet another opposition motion to implement their idea of a paid sick-leave plan, causing the usual crown of Ford-haters to bleat on about what a big blue meanie Ford is.

Now, I’m certainly not against such a paid sick-leave plan. In fact, I think all major employers should offer their employees such a plan, with the government supporting small businesses who are already being crushed by the lockdowns, at least for the duration of the Chinese Communist Party Virus pandemic.

If it’s fair to ask why Ford waited so long to implement such a plan, or why he hasn’t already implemented one (and it is fair), it must also be fair to ask why employers, such as rich corporations like Amazon and Costco haven’t used some of their record profits to give their own employees paid sick-leave.

Jagmeet Singh is always stating that rich corporations need to pay their fair share of taxes. What does Singh think about sick leave paid by those rich corporations that don’t already give that benefit to their employees?
