To all those celebrating the $10 per day daycare program recently announced, remember that this is no different than our “free” healthcare. Remember that fact every year when you file your tax return.
Also remember it when the federal government cuts their portion of the funding, dumping the majority of the cost on the province, just like they did with our “free” healthcare.
Further, remember how great you think $10 per day daycare is when taxes increase to continue to fund this program, while Ontario, already the most indebted sub-sovereign entity, sinks further into debt, a debt that is currently manageable due to historically-low interest rates.
Lastly, remember it when interest rates go up, putting further strain on governments in servicing that debt, that we will either see even higher taxes, or reduced government services. That’s something that even Canadian socialist icon Tommy Douglas understood.
