Flashing green light, pull to the right

October 2009

I’ve noticed several signs posted around the county about this topic,
so maybe this subject bears repeating here:  when you see flashing
green lights on a car in your rear-view mirror, pull to the right.
This is a volunteer firefighter on their way to a fire call.  Small
towns and rural communities are serviced by volunteer fire
departments.  These are ordinary citizens who volunteer to protect
their communtiy.  They may be the hardware store owner, an auto
mechanic or the bartender at the local hotel.  When they receive a call
on their pager, they need to respond quickly and safely to the fire
station.  If closer, they will sometimes go directly to the fire scene.

There is no legal requirement for motorists to pull to the right when
they see flashing green lights on a car (usually a dash-mounted unit),
but it is the responsible thing to do.  Afterall, they may be rushing
to save YOUR family from YOUR buning house.
