More than 100 people attended a rally at Barrie’s Meridian Square on a very cold Thursday night, 3 March, to show support for Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s invasion of their country.
Organized by former Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte MP Alex Nuttall, speakers at the rally included Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman, Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte MPP Doug Downey, Simcoe County Warden and Mayor of Tiny Township George Cornel and members of Barrie’s Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church.
James Bezan, MP for Selkirk Interlake Eastman in Manitoba, who is of Ukrainian descent, gave the most powerful speech of the night, concluding that “there is a special place in hell for Vladimir Putin and let’s hope it’s a Ukrainian soldier who puts him there.”
Donations of money, clothing and other needed humanitarian supplies were collected at the rally.
While the Ukrainian community in Barrie is smaller than other cities, such as Toronto, support for the Ukrainian people is very strong in Barrie.
