April 2023
In speaking about electric vehicles to a young-looking cashier at my local grocery store, I was surprised to learn that she was not at all interested in owning one herself. I thought the younger generation were all on board with “saving the planet,” having been told for years by Al Gore and Greta Thunberg that we are in a “climate emergency!”
I would like to publicly issue a challenge to the CEOs of all the automobile manufacturers to tell the public whether they are really interested in discontinuing all their gas-powered vehicle lines to exclusively manufacture electric vehicles (E/V), or whether they want to choice to sell whatever is going to make them a profit, be that E/Vs or gas-powered vehicles, or a profitable combination of both.
Oh sure, if the auto manufacturers do stop producing gas-powered vehicles, as the government is ordering them to do, eventually we will all have to buy an E/V, if we wish to keep driving. However, I’m not hearing the oil companies state they will stop producing gasoline, so people like me will keep their gas-powered vehicles until the doors fall off. In other words, we will see a lot of 20-year-old vehicles being driven by people who aren’t buying expensive E/Vs.
Remember Mr./Ms CEO, once the government subsidies end, you’re the ones who will be left holding the bag when your customers turn to any of your competitors who are still manufacturing gas-powered vehicles. While I personally have no interest in an E/V, I strongly believe in freedom of choice. If the CEOs of the auto manufacturers believe in the freedom of choice to sell products their customers want and products that will make them a profit, something which is good for business and the economy, now is the time to tell “Dear Leader,” our Chinese Communist Party-loving Prime Minister. Remember, 2035 is only twelve years away.
