The Big Apple – A unique roadside attraction

May 2018

Of all the roadside attractions, The Big Apple restaurant and bakery is one of the more unique ones you can find.

Found beside Highway 401 in Colborne, Ontario, The Big Apple opened in 1984 and has evolved into a mini amusement park.  It’s easily spotted due to the large 35 foot high, 38 foot wide big red apple sitting beside the restaurant and bakery, the largest apple-shaped structure in the world.  A great view of the surrounding area can be found on the apple’s observation deck.

Visitors can order freshly baked pies, bread and sweets like fudge and butter tarts, dine in the restaurant, buy souvenirs or specialty food items like jam and honey products in the gift shop or enjoy free activities like the petting zoo, a children’s playground, mini golf, shuffleboard, ping-pong, lawn bowling, a nature trail or ride the miniature train.

Also on-site is a cider brewery and licenced pub with a terrace.  Special events, business and dinner parties and festivals are also held at The Big Apple on occasion.

The Big Apple is located at 22 Orchard Drive, Colbourne at Highway 401 Exit 497.
